Combo Tour : Johannesburg & Soweto
This combination tour offers travelers the opportunity to visit both Soweto and Johannesburg as a full day tour. The tour begins by exploring the vibrant city of Johannesburg before embarking on a tour of Soweto, which is often described as "the Birth Place of the Struggle".
The establishment of modern-day Johannesburg began in 1886 with the discovery of gold. This precious metal transformed the simple mining camp into the "Hub" of Africa. The tour includes a visit to Museum Africa, which provides a look at the rich history of the city of Johannesburg; a brief visit to the Old Nedbank building; a trip over the famous Nelson Mandela bridge; we spend time at Constitution Hill, which is built on the Old Fort Prison where both Nelson Mandela and "Mahatama" Ghandi were incarcerated; and then on to a visit of a real muti shop and the renowned Kwa Mai Mai for a taste of traditional African Beer; and so much more.
Soweto, short for "SOuth WEstern TOwnships" was the brain child of the Apartheid Government, and came into being in 1956 as part of the "Group Areas Act". On this tour we journey to the "Birth place of the struggle", as we explore the Regina Church, a famous refuge from the State police; visit the homes of Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu; pay our respects at the Hector Pieterson Memorial; and visit Freedom Square, amongst other sites of significance.
