Soweto, short for South Western Townships, is an urban area in the greater metropolis of Johannesburg, Gauteng. This settlement was once a jarring example of segregation in the apartheid era of South Africa, reserved for black Africans. However, a resilient combination of hope and resistance blossomed, and the subsequent events led Soweto to become known as the birthplace of the struggle, the fight for freedom.
