Big Five safaris capture the spirit of Africa

South Africa is truly a diverse land that boasts an abundance of amazing sights, pristine countryside and breathtaking beauty. Visiting any of the numerous game reserves and parks will leave you in awe of the wealth of vegetation that is unique to our country and a real sight to behold. Visit these areas at the right time and you will be welcomed by sheets of brilliant flowers, colouring the earth in unbelievable colours for as far as the eye can see. And roaming these magnificent plains is a myriad of wildlife. No African holiday would be complete without exploring this tremendously rich experience – the cherry on top definitely being the Big Five safaris where you will be able to see the magnificent lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros in their natural habitat.

There is certainly no shortage of game farms and reserves offering Big Five safaris, but the most popular without a doubt is the world famous Kruger National Park. This vast reserve covering almost 19 000 km 2 (± 7 400 mi 2) of pristine countryside, boasts the largest selection of mammals in the entire country and has many campsites offering top class accommodation and facilities.

Much smaller, but just as impressive in its own right, is the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, adjacent to the impressive Sun City resort. It is situated in an ancient volcano crater which is on the border of the Kalahari and Lowveld regions. Although this is not the original location of all of the Big Five members, they have all successfully been introduced to this park.

If a complete safari holiday is not quite your vacation of choice, but you would still like to see members of the Big Five, there are also a number of safari parks within driving distance of Johannesburg. Take a day tour to the De Wildt Centre or the Lion Safari Park and get a chance to see the wildlife in their natural habitat. You can even touch a real lion cub or even feed the giraffes!
